The Rogue Woman's Guide to Un-Perfection

Bleustockings is the last refuge for the intelligent, witty, often misunderstood, self empowered women each of us is…or at least is striving to be.

Literary circles known as Blue Stocking societies became popular in England and America during the 1700’s. These clubs acquired their name from the rebelliously clad Benjamin Stillingfleet, a prominent member whose signature fashion statement was to wear blue stockings rather than the customary white hose worn by most men of his day. So many women became Blue Stocking members that the word “blue stocking” came to denote any women with literary or academic interests.

The following words of Frances Wright eloquently embody the spirit of The Bleu Stockings Blog:

“I am not going to question your opinions. I am not going to meddle with your beliefs. I am not going to dictate to you mine. All I say is examine; inquire. Look into the nature of things. Search out the ground of your opinions, the for and the against. Know why you believe and understand what you believe, and possess a reason for the faith that is in you.”

  1. What a super duper quote by that Frances Wright. Oy! That just damn rocks! I always thought that was what “liberals” were supposed to be like. You just don’t see this kind of philosophy anymore. Cheers!
